When you may be owed a refund
- The goods were classified under a code with a higher duty rate than the correct one
- A free trade agreement applied but was not claimed at the time of import
- The value declared was too high, or the price was reduced after import
- The goods were defective, damaged or not what was ordered, and were returned or destroyed
- Imported goods, or goods made from them, were exported from Canada (duty drawback)
How we work
We review your past entries, work out which ones qualify and how much can be recovered, and prepare and file the refund or drawback claims with CBSA together with the supporting documents. We follow each claim until it is decided.
Time limits
Most refund and drawback claims must be made within a fixed period after the goods were imported or exported, often four years. Claims made after the deadline cannot be paid, so it is worth reviewing your imports regularly.
