Why the HS code matters
Every product imported into Canada is classified under a 10-digit code in the Customs Tariff. The first six digits follow the international Harmonized System; the last four are Canadian. The code sets the duty rate for each country of origin and links your goods to other departments' requirements. A wrong code can mean paying too much, or paying too little and then owing the difference plus penalties.
How we classify
- We look at what the product is, what it is made of and what it is used for, not just its name
- We apply the General Interpretative Rules, the section and chapter notes and CBSA guidance
- We check the duty rate for your country of origin and any free trade agreement that applies
- We flag goods that may be subject to anti-dumping duty, surtax or permits
- We keep a product list so repeat items are classified the same way every time
Product lists and new suppliers
Send us your full product list or a new supplier's catalogue before you order. We return the HS code and duty rate for each item, so you can price your goods with the real landed cost.
Try it yourself first
Our free tool AskDuty.com searches the Canadian Customs Tariff in English, French and Chinese, estimates duty and GST, and can suggest an HS code from a product description. When it matters, ask us to confirm.
