Permits & government requirements

Many goods need more than customs clearance. Other government departments set their own rules, and goods that do not meet them are held at the border.

Goods that often need more

Food, plants and animals

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA): licences, permits, certificates and labelling for food, plants, seeds, wood packaging and animal products.

Health and consumer products

Health Canada: natural health products, cosmetics, medical devices, drugs and consumer products with safety rules.

Vehicles and tires

Transport Canada: vehicles, tires and child car seats must meet Canadian safety standards.

Controlled goods

Global Affairs Canada import permits for certain steel, textiles, agricultural products under quota and other controlled goods.

How we help

  • We check your products against each department's requirements before you order or ship
  • We tell you which licence, permit, certificate or label is needed and who issues it
  • We send the department's data with your entry, so it can be reviewed together with customs
  • If goods are held, we find out why and what is needed to release them

Previous CFIA import decisions can be looked up in the CFIA Automated Import Reference System (AIRS). We read them for you and confirm what applies to your shipment.
